Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Assistant Secretary for Heath,
Adm. Brian Christine, during his ceremonial swearing-in, announced the launch of PHS Mission Fit, a major holistic fitness and wellness initiative designed to strengthen readiness, resilience, and unity across the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps.
For more than two centuries, Public Health Service officers have served on the frontlines of public health as one of the nation’s eight uniformed services and the only one dedicated solely to protecting, promoting, and advancing the health and safety of the American people. PHS Mission Fit supports this mission by modernizing physical fitness expectations and integrating whole-person wellness, including fitness, sleep, nutrition, and mental well-being, which are key components of the Administration’s work to Make America Healthy Again.
“Through PHS Mission Fit, we are building a culture that values readiness and fitness,” said Adm. Brian Christine, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health and Head of the USPHS Commissioned Corps. “We are not just responding to crises—we are preparing for them by strengthening unity and whole-person wellness across our nation’s uniformed public health force.”
Key components of PHS Mission Fit include:
- Clear expectations for physical fitness and consistent training. Beginning April 1, 2026, officers will complete two Public Health Service Physical Fitness Tests (PFT) annually
- Holistic support and resources across physical, mental, nutritional, and sleep health
- Weekly structured exercise opportunities
- Motivational challenges to build camaraderie and engagement
With PHS Mission Fit, the USPHS Commissioned Corps is preparing not only for today’s public health needs but for future challenges that require a strong, resilient, mission-ready force.
