History

Challenge coins are a longstanding Uniformed Service tradition.  Historically, these coins were given out as a member joined an organization.  The “challenge” occurs when the individual is asked to produce the coin at a moments notice, meaning the coin is always carried as a reminder of the principles symbolized by the coin.  Over the years they have become deeply routed in Uniformed Service culture and have been issued to improve morale as well as reward for a job well done.

JOAG’s PHS Challenge Coins

There are currently two PHS Challenge Coins available  through COF: the JOAG Medallion and the PHS Core Values Coin.  These two coins are not only meant to foster esprit de corps and boost morale, but they are also meant to serve as daily reminders about what it means to be a Commissioned Corps officer.
