Health services officers in the Commissioned Corps represent many disciplines, including the biological, physical, environmental, and social sciences; optometry; social work; podiatry; medical technology; dental hygiene; medical records administration; computer science; health education; health care administration; and other public health specialties such as physician assistant. You can treat patients in underserved and disadvantaged areas, respond to public health emergencies and natural disasters, educate communities about health, work in science or health administration, or concentrate on other areas within your specialty. As part of a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, you'll enjoy excellent benefits and work/life balance while making a real difference in the Nations health.
"It has always been and continues to be an honor to wear the uniform of the U.S. Public Health Service. The opportunities for officers in the Commissioned Corps are varied, interesting, and above all rewarding. Officers in the Corps can play a role in making a positive difference in people’s lives by working in rural health, research, with state health agencies, and by participating in emergency response situations like hurricanes, oil spills, flooding, and public health emergencies like the H1N1 pandemic. The opportunity to work in a variety of settings has been most gratifying. Opportunities for personal and professional growth abound in the PHS. I can’t imagine having had as great a career as I’ve had in this service, anywhere else."
